CRASH magazine was first published in February 1984 and quickly became the most influential magazine dedicated to the ZX Spectrum, Britain’s most popular 8-bit home computer of the 1980s. At its peak, CRASH sold over 100,000 copies monthly, shaping the opinions of a generation of gamers and developers.
As the 8-bit era faded and the ZX Spectrum declined in the early 1990s, so did CRASH. The final printed issue was Issue 98, in April 1992, marking the end of an era.
In the mid-2010s, fueled by nostalgia and a resurgent retro computing scene, CRASH was resurrected as a quarterly print magazine by Fusion Retro Books, led by Chris Wilkins. The reimagined CRASH maintains its status as a cult favourite, bridging the original spirit of the magazine with today’s retro community. It’s available in physical and digital formats and has become a cornerstone of the ZX Spectrum renaissance.
